A cowboy was a type of cattle herder typical of the Ancient West period of Earth. It was also a more general term referring to those living in the Ancient West, especially in the fiction genre known as Western.

Charles Tucker once speculated that Zefram Cochrane spent his nights reading "about cowboys and Indians". (ENT: "Shuttlepod One")
