Corgi is a company in Great Britain which has created die-cast vehicle models since the 1950s under the Corgi and Corgi Jr. labels, among others. An subsidiary of the company called Corgi Books published Star Trek novels in the 1970s and early 1980s. Corgi made an early acquaintance with the Star Trek franchise in 1980 when it obtained the casting tools for the second set of the two die-cast models made by the bankrupt Meccano Dinky Toys. Just prior to the release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Corgi (under its sub-brand Corgi Jr.) re-released the models as Dinky Toys never got around to formally market the models in the UK themselves.

The company obtained a license to release die-cast models based on starships seen in various Star Trek episodes and movies in 2005. Five to eight-inch long die-cast models of the USS Enterprise, a Klingon Bird-of-Prey, and a model of the USS Enterprise-D were first released in February 2006 with display stands. Later in the year, these were followed by unpainted "raw metal" versions of each ship labeled as the 40th Anniversary Limited Edition and each came with a numbered certificate, four AAA batteries, and an electronically adjustable illuminated stand.

Models of the USS Defiant, USS Voyager, and D'deridex-class Romulan Warbird were scheduled for release in September 2007 but were not produced.[1] The USS Enterprise-E was also tentatively scheduled for future release but never saw production.

Corgi obtained a multi-year license to produce collectibles based on props and ships from Star Trek in January 2008, though it appears that most releases were intended to be released under the Master Replicas brand, a company that Corgi merged with in 2006.[2] Master Replicas' involvement was widely lauded by collectors due to the company's high quality prop replicas from the Star Wars franchise and their "studio scale" three-foot model of the USS Enterprise (TOS). Master Replicas' and Corgi's association with Star Trek ended abruptly in September 2009 when it was announced that licenses to produce replica ships and props had been awarded to eFX Collectibles and QMx.[3]
