The Columbus was later created as a CGI by CBS Digital. First appearance of this model occurred in "The Journey to Babel" when the Galileo landed in the Enterprise shuttlebay. The registry of the shuttle was seen in this episode, matching the number first assigned to the vessel by the 1970s publication Star Trek Maps.
Prior to assuming command of the Enterprise, Captain Christopher Pike was transported to the starship by the Columbus. From the Columbus, the captain inspected his new command. (Ships of the Line, page 34)
