A class-1 probe was a type of probe used by Starfleet ships in the late 24th century.

History[]

In 2365, the USS Enterprise-D launched a probe of this type with a full sensor platform to study a hole in space, created by Nagilum. (TNG: "Where Silence Has Lease")

Later that year, the Enterprise-D launched a probe to study an energy vortex. This probe was destroyed by the vortex. (TNG: "Time Squared")

Much later that year on Drema IV, an Enterprise survey team suggested that harmonic vibrations emitted by class-1 probes modified to function as resonators protected by torpedo casings fired into the planet would shatter the planet's dilithium lattices, and thus alleviate the tectonic stresses that were tearing the planet apart. The plan was a success and the planet was saved from destruction. (TNG: "Pen Pals")

A class-1 probe, with sensors set to maximum scan and modified for planetary probe, was launched into the Romulan Neutral Zone to Nelvana III to scan for signs of a Romulan base on the planet. The probe went into orbit and began to pick up low level subspace radio emissions. (TNG: "The Defector")

In 2366, the Enterprise launched a probe of this type to study a closing temporal anomaly before heading to Archer IV. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise")

In 2367, the Enterprise was investigating radiation anomalies in the Gamma Arigulon system that were first reported by the starship LaSalle. When the preliminary readings were inconclusive, and Data couldn't detect abnormalities in Gamma Arigulon's radiant energy, Captain Jean-Luc Picard gave the order to prepare two class-1 probes. However, before the probes were launched, a Klingon attack cruiser decloaked, and the captain stopped the launch. (TNG: "Reunion")

31st century temporal agent Daniels had the schematics of a class-1 probe in his database, which Captain Jonathan Archer scrolled past while searching for information in 2152. (ENT: "Future Tense")

Background information[]

Based on dialogue in "Where Silence Has Lease", the class-1 probe was more advanced than a scanner probe. The same probe model was used to represent both probe types in the episode and a class 3 probe in TNG: "The Enemy".

According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual (p. 116), the class-1 probe has a 200,000 km range and can travel at half the speed of light. The probe is powered by a vectored deuterium microfusion propulsion system, and can send telemetry on 12,000 channels at 12 megawatts. The probe is capable of scanning the full EM spectrum, subspace and interstellar chemistry.

Class-1 probes are one of many attributes you can buy for your custom starship in the game Star Trek: Starship Creator.
