A clam is a marine lifeform that is frequently used for cooking purposes.
Clams were served in Sisko's Creole Kitchen. After Benjamin Sisko took a leave of absence from Starfleet, he would often clean the clams before cooking them. (DS9: "Tears of the Prophets")
Three months later, Jake Sisko would ask him rhetorically how many clams they cleaned since they arrived. His father joked he wanted to take some with him to clean on the journey to Tyree.
