A clam was a marine lifeform that was frequently used for cooking purposes.

Clams were served in Sisko's Creole Kitchen. After Benjamin Sisko took a leave of absence from Starfleet, he would often clean the clams before cooking them. (DS9: "Tears of the Prophets")

Three months later, Jake Sisko asked him rhetorically how many clams they cleaned since they arrived. His father joked he wanted to take some with him to clean on the journey to Tyree. Sisko was cleaning clams when a member of the Cult of the Pah-wraiths attempted to kill him. Fortunately, Jake was able to incapacitate the man using a sack of clams. (DS9: "Image in the Sand")
