Chocolate is a confection produced from the ground cacao seeds of a tropical tree on Earth. The seeds are processed in a variety of methods and the resulting end products - such as cocoa butter and cocoa powder - are combined with various other ingredients, to produce chocolate. Chocolate - in its processed, ready-to-eat form - is often sweetened, as raw chocolate is bitter. Although many varieties, flavors and colors of chocolate exist, it is generally dark brown in color.

Counselor Deanna Troi was particularly known for her fondness of the dish, calling it "a serious thing". She once remarked that she had never met a chocolate she didn't like. (TNG: "The Game") Troi also preferred "real chocolate", not one of the "perfectly synthesized, ingeniously enhanced imitations" produced by replicators. (TNG: "The Price")

When first meeting Odo in 2365, Quark offered him something to drink, chocolate or companionship but all those offers were refused by Odo. (DS9: "Necessary Evil")

According to Geordi La Forge in 2367, there was a chocolate on Risa that counselor Troi surely would have liked. (TNG: "The Mind's Eye")
