Cheron was a Class M planet located in the southern region of the Milky Way Galaxy near the Coalsack, which once supported a humanoid civilization of Cheron natives. When the USS Enterprise scanned the planet in 2268, the instruments revealed large uninhabited cities, extensive traffic systems barren of traffic, and lower animal life-forms and sand encroaching on the cities. There was no sign of sapient life, and there were vast numbers of unburied corpses in the cites.
In the mid-23rd century, this area of space was largely unexplored by Starfleet, so the race was previously unknown to the Federation. (TOS: "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield")
According to the Star Trek: Star Charts (pgs. 60, 66), Cheron was located in the 83 Leonis system, in the Beta Quadrant. The 83 Leonis system was located in or near Federation space (in the late 24th century). This system was a single star system. Primary for this system was a Class K star with a magnitude lower than Sol.
