Background
The Challenger-class was a "kit-bashed" study model built by Ed Miarecki, barely glimpsed among the wreckage of the "graveyard" scene in the episode. It was made from spare pieces of Galaxy-class starship models. Although the previous surmise of the Challenger being a mix of Constitution refit and Constellation-class pieces has been ultimately refuted, wrong depictions along these lines persist in fandom. The incorrect reference originated in comics, in a Star Trek: The Next Generation Annual story, "Thin Ice," published by DC, which portrayed such a vessel and referred to it as Challenger-class, the USS Marco Polo NCC-7219.
