Chaffee

The Chaffee was a Type-10 Federation shuttlecraft assigned to the USS Defiant.

In late 2374, Benjamin Sisko, Miles O'Brien and Julian Bashir used the Chaffee to enter the atmosphere of a Class L planet to rescue Lisa Cusak. (DS9: "The Sound of Her Voice")

Background

According to designer Doug Drexler, the Chaffee was named for astronaut Roger B. Chaffee, who died, along with Gus Grissom and Edward Higgins White, aboard Apollo 1.

It was not revealed whether or not this craft survived the destruction of the Defiant at the Second Battle of Chin'toka in 2375. It could have been used by some of the crew to leave the ship.

In the non-canon Deep Space Nine series of novels, shuttle Chaffee was mentioned as being assigned to the replacement Defiant. The Mission Gamma storyline has a description, in "Cathedral", of the craft being labeled "NX-74205". Since that is the registry of the previous Defiant, it may suggest that the shuttle was the one from the previous ship.
