The Chaffee was a Federation Chaffee-type shuttlepod that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to the USS Defiant. It was shuttle 01.

In late 2374, Benjamin Sisko, Miles O'Brien and Julian Bashir used the Chaffee to enter the atmosphere of a Class L planet to rescue Lisa Cusak. The use of the pod was preferred because its power systems did not utilize antimatter, and made it possible for the pod to survive travel through the exotic energy field surrounding the planet. The Chaffee was designated as Defiant shuttlecraft 1. [1]

The shuttlepod was named for astronaut Roger B. Chaffee, who died, along with Gus Grissom and Edward Higgins White, aboard Apollo 1.

Apocrypha Edit

According to Deep Space Nine series of novels, the shuttle Chaffee could have survived the destruction of the Defiant at the Second Battle of Chin'toka in 2375, as it was mentioned being assigned to the second USS Defiant also.
