The Cetacean Institute was an aquatic mammal research and education facility in the City of Sausalito on Earth's North American Continent which was in operation in 1986.

The Institute was situated on the shore of San Francisco Bay.

The Institute housed the largest seawater tank in the world which housed the only two Humpback Whales in captivity, a male and female named George and Gracie.

In 1985, the Institute's assistant director, Dr. Gillian Taylor encountered Admiral James T. Kirk. Kirk and his crew had traveled back in time from the 22nd century with the mission of obtaining two Humpbacks in an effort to repopulate the species, which had been hunted to extinction by the mid-21st century.
