Cargo transporters were larger scale versions of personnel transporters optimized for the transport of inanimate objects. Cargo transporters could often be reconfigured to quantum level mode, making the transport of lifeforms and other complex materials possible.

In 2263 of the alternate reality, Jaylah lead Montgomery Scott to the wrecked USS Franklin, which was equipped with cargo transporters. In order to rescue Leonard McCoy and Spock from Swarm ships, Scott modified the transporters to be able to beam lifeforms, but only beamed McCoy and Spock one at a time for safety reasons. Later, during the attack on Krall's base, the Franklin's cargo transporters were put to use to rescue the crew of the USS Enterprise by beaming an away team to Krall's base and the Enterprise crew back to the Franklin. For this, Scott further modified the transporters, with the aid of Pavel Chekov, so he could beam twenty lifeforms at a time while using pulse beacons as pattern enhancers. During an ensuing attack on Yorktown, McCoy and Spock were able to use the Franklin's cargo transporters to beam to a Swarm ship and hijack it. (Star Trek Beyond)

In 2367, a brainwashed Geordi La Forge used a cargo transporter to beam down weapons to rebels on Krios. (TNG: "The Mind's Eye")

In 2368, the Ux-Mal tried to get Captain Picard to beam others of their kind aboard the USS Enterprise-D, to take over the crew's bodies using the cargo transporter in cargo bay 4. (TNG: "Power Play")
