A carbon-based lifeform was a life form, typically with a nervous system, whose critical functions fundamentally depended upon carbon atoms. Metabolism, growth, and genetic information all required carbon-based molecules.

Humans, Klingons, Romulans and most other species in the Milky Way Galaxy were carbon-based lifeforms. Fruits and vegetables, as well as animal life, were carbon-based.

There were also other forms of life that were not carbon-based, such as photonic lifeforms or silicon-based lifeforms.
