Captains Courageous was a 19th century novel by the British author Rudyard Kipling.

In 2375, Lieutenant Tom Paris was telling Captain Kathryn Janeway about his obsession with stories about the ocean as a child and how much he enjoyed reading books like Captains Courageous, Moby Dick, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. (VOY: " Thirty Days")

From the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 117), "Classic maritime adventure novel written by Earth novelist Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936), published in 1897. It was the story of a wealthy man's son who was rescued after being washed overboard from an ocean liner, then learns to work with his rescuers as a fisherman."
