Background

The Captain's Oath is a revised version of the well known James T. Kirk's monologue from the title sequence of Star Trek: The Original Series. However, Kirk's recital of the Oath marks the first time that ii appears in-universe as a piece that is not exclusively spoken to the audience and in dialogue.
