The Explored Galaxy

The location of Capella on "The Explored Galaxy" wall chart

Capella was the primary of the Capellan system. This system was in a sector contested by both the Federation and the Klingon Empire in the 2260s.

In 2267, the Federation and the Klingon Empire attempted to gain mining rights from the Capellans of Capella IV. The rare mineral topaline, vital to the life support systems of planetoid colonies, was in abundance there. The crew of the USS Enterprise secured the mining rights by treaty for the Federation. (TOS: "Friday's Child")

In 2293, the location of Capella in the Milky Way Galaxy was labeled in a star chart that was in Captain James T. Kirk's quarters aboard the USS Enterprise-A. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, okudagram)

Backgroung

According to the Star Trek: Star Charts, Capella (Alpha Aurigae) was located in or near Federation space, in the Alpha Quadrant. This was a quadrinary star system. Capella A was a G class star with a magnitude of +3, which was ten times brighter than Sol. Capella B was a G class star. Capella C and Capella D were both M class stars. (pg. 36)
