Camus II

Camus II from orbit

Type: Planet
Native Species: Camus II natives (extinct)
Location: Camus system
Alpha Quadrant

Camus II was an uninhabited planet. The planet had a ring system. This was the homeworld of an extinct intelligent species. It was the second planet of the Camus planetary system.

At warp 2, it was located approximately 48 hours away from Benecia and 72 hours away from Starbase 2 in the opposite direction. (TOS: "Turnabout Intruder") The planet was located in the Alpha Quadrant. Its location in the Milky Way Galaxy was depicted on a Federation star chart in 2293. Camus II was a formerly-inhabited planet, where all life had ceased to exist long before the mid-23rd century. At that time, visitors had to avoid exposure to celebium, which was deadly to humanoid life, by using celebium shielding.

In 2267, Doctor Janice Lester was sent here with a team of archaeologists to investigate the planet. When Dr. Lester found a life-energy transfer machine built by the now extinct Camus II natives, she devised a plan to take over the body of James T. Kirk and assume command of the starship USS Enterprise. Two years later, together with Dr. Arthur Coleman, Dr. Lester, secretly murdered the entire expedition staff by radiation exposure to lure the USS Enterprise to the planet to investigate the "mysterious" deaths. (TOS: "Turnabout Intruder")

In 2367, the USS Enterprise-D was due at this planet for an archaeological survey, but diverted to Turkana IV responding to a distress call from the Arcos. (TNG: "Legacy")

Background information

Behind the scenes

The writing system of the extinct Camus II natives had symbols identical to Scalosian.

According to Star Trek Encyclopedia, Camus II was referred to in "Legacy", the 80th episode of TNG, as a homage to "Turnabout Intruder", the 79th and last episode of TOS. The "in-joke" was devised by Rick Berman, Jonathan Frakes and Eric Stillwell.

"The Explored Galaxy"

"The Explored Galaxy" was a map of charted space in the Alpha Quadrant. Camus II was located between the Tholian Assembly and Romulus. Both locations were identified in DS9: "The Search, Part II", "Call to Arms" as being located in this quadrant. This star chart was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were: TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game" and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".

Star Trek: Star Charts

The Camus system was located in or near Federation space. This system was a single star system. Camus was a M class star with a magnitude of +5, which was the same brightness of Sol. ("United Federation of Planets III")
