CRM 114

The CRM 114

The CRM 114 was a hand-held directed energy weapon manufactured by the Breen that was effective against both moving vehicles and surface emplacements. It was guaranteed to penetrate reactive armor in the six to fifteen centimeter range and force fields up to 4.6 gigajoules. One of the weapon's most popular features was the quick recharge. Such weapons were expensive, but extremely popular.

Quark sold two thousand CRM 114s when he began working for weapons dealers Hagath and Gaila in 2373. (DS9: "Business as Usual")

Background

The name of the CRM-114 is a reference to a recurring theme in the films of Stanley Kubrick. In Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, the CRM114 is an aircraft radio cipher receiver with an "auto-discriminator mode"; in 2001: A Space Odyssey, CRM-114 is the registry number of the Jupiter-bound spacecraft Discovery; in A Clockwork Orange, Alex takes a formula called serum-114; and in Eyes Wide Shut, the mortuary is located in "Level/Wing C, Room 114".

It is seemingly fitting to have a Kubrick reference in the episode as guest star Steven Berkoff (Hagath) played Tom in Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange, which starred Malcolm McDowell, who also happens to be the uncle of DS9 actor and episode director Alexander Siddig.
