Botany Bay was a penal colony located on the shores of Australia on Earth during the 22nd century. (ENT: "The Augments"; TOS: "Space Seed")
Upon uncovering the name of the settlement associated with the pre-warp vessel SS Botany Bay, Captain James T. Kirk implied that it was perhaps a penal deportation vessel. (TOS: "Space Seed")
Botany Bay was the destination of the First Fleet, a group of convicts and military, who traveled to Australia in the late 18th century to establish a penal colony, but it was not established at Botany Bay due to the lack of fresh water, and the expedition moved north to found Sydney.
