Botany Bay was a penal colony located on the shores of Australia on Earth during the 22nd century. (ENT: "The Augments"; TOS: "Space Seed")

Upon uncovering the name of the settlement associated with the pre-warp vessel SS Botany Bay, Captain James T. Kirk implied that that it was perhaps a penal deportation vessel. (TOS: "Space Seed")

Botany Bay became a penal colony after its discovery during the late 18th century, but quickly became a free settlement and eventually part of Sydney. In ENT: "The Augments" it is referred to in present tense, therefore implying that it was at this time again a prison colony, but in TOS: "Space Seed" it is referred to in the past tense, so the colony might have been discontinued. However since Kirk suggested the ship was named after the colony, he was undoubtedly referring to the first penal colony.
