For the Vorta with a similar name, please see Borath.

Boreth was an inhabited class M planet or moon in the Boreth system. Located in the Beta Quadrant, it was the site of the Boreth Monastery, dedicated to Kahless the Unforgettable and the most sacred place in the Klingon Empire. (DIS: "Through the Valley of Shadows"; SNW: "Strange New Worlds")

Astronomical data[]

Boreth planet, remastered

Boreth in 2369

Boreth was one of a pair of closely orbiting planetary bodies, and thus has been described both as a planet and as a moon. Its climate was frigid and snowy. It had mountainous surface terrain with extensive lava flows. It was one of the only known locations where time crystals occurred naturally. (DIS: "Through the Valley of Shadows"; SNW: "Strange New Worlds")

The planet was about a day's travel from Qo'noS and twelve days' travel by shuttle from the Gariman sector. (TNG: "Rightful Heir")

History[]

According to The Story of the Promise, upon departing for Sto-vo-kor, Kahless promised he would return one day and pointed to a star: "Look for me there, on that point of light." Once the Klingons developed spaceflight, the Followers of Kahless traveled there and built a monastery on Boreth, a world in that star system. (TNG: "Rightful Heir")

For centuries, the monastery had virtually no contact with outsiders. Generations of Klingon clerics had served not only to guard the spiritual legacy of Kahless, but also the time crystals. As of the mid-23rd century, even the Chancellor of the Klingon High Council had no authority on Boreth. (DIS: "Through the Valley of Shadows")

The Boreth Monastery in 2257

In 2257, the Section 31 ship NCIA-93 delivered the infant child of Chancellor L'Rell and Voq to Boreth, to be placed in the care of its monks. (DIS: "Point of Light", "Through the Valley of Shadows")

Later that year, a red burst appeared over the planet. The USS Discovery managed to negotiate passage to Boreth from Chancellor L'Rell. After using the spore drive to reach the planet, Captain Christopher Pike visited the monastery and managed to obtain a time crystal from the Timekeepers. (DIS: "Through the Valley of Shadows")

In an alternate timeline where the Federation became embroiled in a brutal war with the Romulan Star Empire in the 2260s, Pike traveled to Boreth and was given a time crystal with which to change his past. (SNW: "A Quality of Mercy")

In 2369, Worf visited Boreth due to experiencing a crisis of faith. During his time there, he uncovered a conspiracy by the clerics to create a clone of Kahless and install him as the Klingon emperor. (TNG: "Rightful Heir")

Worf again spent some time on Boreth after the destruction of the USS Enterprise-D in 2371. (DS9: "The Way of the Warrior")

An image of the Boreth Monastery was displayed on several screens on Deep Space 9's Promenade and Replimat in 2372. (DS9: "The Muse")

Background information[]

This planet's quadrant of origin is inferred based on the position of its star system as seen in the star chart appearing in the Star Trek: Discovery episode "Through the Valley of Shadows".

The script for "Rightful Heir" describes Boreth as "mountainous... desolate... no cities or dwellings of any kind except for a single temple situated high up on the tallest mountaintop."

The pronunciation of "Boreth" has been explained by different sources as:

  • "Rightful Heir" pronunciation guide: "BOR-reth" [1]
  • "The Way of the Warrior" pronunciation guide: "BOR-eth" [2]
  • StarTrek.com: "bore-OTH" [3]

Apocrypha[]

The novelization of The Way of the Warrior had several scenes set on Boreth.

The Bajoran Ascendancy (β), from a horrific alternate future in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Millennium trilogy, named a Klingon warship after the planet.

Boreth was the location of a battle between the forces of Martok and Marjod (β) in The Left Hand of Destiny, Book Two.

B'Elanna Torres, in the Voyager relaunch book series, traveled to Boreth to find her mother, Miral. Torres later decided to stay on Boreth and immerse herself in Klingon tradition.

Taking place in 2409, Boreth is also featured in the video game Star Trek Online. Alongside the clone of Kahless, the player has to fight demonic forces of the Fek'Ihri in the lava caves of the planet.
