The bone-knitting laser (also referred to as a knitter) was a specialized medical instrument used for repairing bones. A viable alternative to using a knitter was the use of a splint. (TNG: "Contagion")

When a miniaturized Hikaru Sulu broke his leg and the normal bone-knitting laser technology could not be used because of the large size, Dr. McCoy repaired Sulu's leg bone using a microscope laser. (TAS: "The Terratin Incident")
