Betazed

The planet of Betazed was the homeworld of the telepathic Betazoid species.

Overview

The planet Betazed was an important member world of the United Federation of Planets. The Betazed Federation ambassador during the 2360s and 70s was Lwaxana Troi, daughter of the Fifth House, holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed. Betazed has some level of a matriarchy. (TNG: "Angel One", "Manhunt", DS9: "The Forsaken")

Betazed hosted the biennial Trade Agreements Conference in 2366. (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")

The USS Enterprise-D passed fairly close to Betazed in late 2367 and diverted its course to pick up Lwaxana Troi. (TNG: "Half a Life")

Deep Space 9 was quite far from Betazed, although a transport from the station often left for the planet. (DS9: "The Muse")

Vash was unwelcome (persona non grata in Q's words) on Betazed. (DS9: "Q-Less")

The University of Betazed is located on Betazed. (TNG: "Tin Man", "Ménage à Troi", "Qpid")

History

During the Dominion War in 2374, Betazed was occupied by Dominion invasion forces. The Federation Tenth Fleet had been assigned to defend Betazed, but was caught out of position on a training exercise. As a result Betazed fell to the Dominion within ten hours. Once Betazed had been captured, other worlds nearby, including Vulcan, Tellar, Alpha Centauri, and Andor were at risk of Dominion invasion. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight")

Betazed was presumably liberated before or at the end of the war, as Riker and Troi planned their honeymoon in 2379 on Betazed.

Betazed was consistently described as a lush, beautiful world. The planet's climate varied from dense jungles to wide canyons and cliffs. Many of the major continents are dotted with lakes.

Background information

According to Star Trek: Star Charts, on page 33, Betazed was the fifth planet in the Beta Zeta system. The Beta Zeta system was located in the Alpha Quadrant. This planet was governed by the Fifth House of Betazed from the capital Rixx, and was admitted into the United Federation of Planets in 2273. There were 1.3 billion Betazoids living on Betazed. This species has been warp capable since antiquity. Major attractions on this world include Lake Cataria, Janaran Falls, and the University of Betazed. This system was named by the 21st century human John Burke, chief astronomer of the Royal Academy. On page 36, the single star of the Beta Zeta system was classified as a G-type star.
