Beta Stromgren was the primary of the Beta Stromgren system. This system was located in Sector 25434. This red supergiant star, located twenty-three parsecs beyond the Federation's farthest manned explorations, in Romulan-claimed space, went supernova in 2366. In order to observe the star's stages of expansion and contraction, the Federation dispatched the long-range Vega Nine probe. However, during its observations, the probe discovered a living spacecraft called Gomtuu, code named "Tin Man" by Starfleet, which was orbiting the star. Both the USS Enterprise-D and two Romulan D'deridex-class warbirds were sent to investigate. It was learned that Gomtuu had arrived at the star to die.

Federation first contact specialist Tam Elbrun, aboard the Enterprise-D, was able to make contact with Gomtuu shortly before the star exploded. Gomtuu was able to fling both the Enterprise-D and a Romulan ship clear of the supernova, before it, with Tam Elbrun aboard, disappeared to parts unknown. (TNG: "Tin Man")

"STRUM-gren" was the pronunciation for this star's name from the script pronunciation guide. According to the script, Beta Stromgren was a red supergiant star. [1]
Based on the star's seemingly close proximity to Starbase 152, it would seem that this sun is in, or is relatively near the Beta Quadrant.
According to Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets II") and StarTrek.com, the Beta Stromgren system was located in the Beta Quadrant. [2]
