Batai, a native of the Ressik village, was the son of Kamin and Eline and the younger brother of Meribor.

Batai and his family lived on the planet Kataan in the 14th century. He was named for his father's friend Batai, who died before the younger Batai's birth.

For several years, he didn't know what to do as an adult. He was interested in mathematics and botany but he finally decided to leave school and pursue a career as a musician. (TNG: "The Inner Light")
