The Barzan system was once the location of the stable end of the Barzan wormhole.

In 2366, the USS Enterprise-D hosted negotiations to the rights of this wormhole, which the Barzans claimed was stable. In the end, it was determined that only the Barzan side of the wormhole was stable. As a result of this, two Ferengi became stuck in the Delta Quadrant. (TNG: "The Price")

In 2373, the Ferengi attempted to escape the USS Voyager by traveling back through the wormhole to the Alpha Quadrant. They disrupted the subspace balance of the wormhole, resulting in both ends becoming unstable. (VOY: "False Profits")
