The Barkonians were a pre-industrial society native to Barkon IV. Barkonians were humanoid in appearance, with a distinctive patterned forehead.

History[]

In 2370, a Federation deep space probe went off course and crash landed on the planet a hundred kilometers from a Barkonian settlement. To recover the radioactive material and prevent cultural or bio-contamination, Lieutenant Commander Data of the USS Enterprise-D was sent to recover it.

In addition to the probe's radiation interfering with Data's communications, sometime after collecting the radioactive material Data was involved in an accident that resulted the loss of his memory. Disheveled, he walked more than two hundred "seltons" to a Barkonian village, where he encountered Garvin, the town magistrate, and his daughter Gia. Unaware of his own identity, he took the name "Jayden" and lived among the Barkonians for several days.

Society and culture[]

Barkonian culture once took seriously demons, spirits and monsters, only two generations before adopting more scientific methodology by the 2370s.

One of their beliefs was that the basic elements of the universe were rock, fire, sky, and water. These elements were found in every object, person, animal, or anything. They also believed that another humanoid race, the ice-men, lived in the snow and ice of the Vellorian Mountains of their planet.

Towns were led by a town magistrate, who routinely met with the village elders.

Barkonians believed a nutritious diet was founded on meats, butter and cheese. (TNG: "Thine Own Self")

The script describes the technology of the planet as "roughly equivalent to that of the Renaissance on Earth." [1]
A cut line explained the name "Jayden" came from the story of a handsome nobleman transformed into a frog by a demon's spell. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion (2nd ed., p. 284))
