Balter compound 298 was a hypergolic chemical explosive. This compound was used in Class N(2) planetary environments for engineering and construction applications. In an oxygen atmosphere, this explosive was unstable requiring that personnel handling it did so in accordance with SFRA 2884.3. In 2367, this compound was stored on aboard the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D.

In that year, balter compound 298 was on a list of explosives that Lieutenant Commander Data and Counselor Deanna Troi searched through in an attempt to find one that could produce enough energy to release the USS Enterprise-D and an alien ship from the Tyken's Rift. (TNG: "Night Terrors")

This compound was mentioned in the graphics created for the remastered episode.
