Avidyne engines were a type of impulse propulsion system utilized in construction of late 23rd century Constellation-class starships.

Geordi La Forge spent some time researching Avidyne engines, noting that by the standards of a Galaxy-class starship, "they're archaic. Touchy." (TNG: "Peak Performance")

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 1, p. 53), "The term 'avidyne' was devised by writer Melinda Snodgrass as a variation of 'Yoyodyne', a reference to the cult s-f movie Buckaroo Banzai, whose writer borrowed it from Thomas Pynchon's novel, The Crying of Lot 49."
