Atmospheric stabilization was an important system aboard starships in the 23rd century. In an alternate reality, when Narada attacked the USS Kelvin moments after emerging from a black hole, it managed to disable the ship's atmospheric stabilization with the second hit, causing an air vacuum which sucked several officers of the Kelvin into space .
