Ulen is a long-time Star Trek fan and took part in the radio contest on the KZOK-FM radio show The Bob Rivers Show, where she won the final walk-on part. She visited the set and filmed her scenes on a Monday in March 2004 along radio show host DJ Bob Rivers and a charity auction winner, Brian D'Arcy. On set, she met and was photographed with Scott Bakula, Connor Trinneer, and Jolene Blalock, and was present to see the scene in engineering which involved Mary Mara and stuntman Paul Eliopoulos.

More recently, Ulen returned to the Trek franchise and portrayed a Vulcan teacher and a wedding guest in Tim Russ' fan film Star Trek: Of Gods and Men, where she appeared alongside Star Trek performers Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Alan Ruck, Garrett Wang, William Wellman, Jr., J.G. Hertzler, Gary Graham, Chase Masterson, Tim Russ himself, Crystal Allen, Ethan Phillips, Cirroc Lofton, Lawrence Montaigne, James Cawley, John Carrigan, Grace Lee Whitney, Jeffery Quinn, Arlene Martel, Jack Donner, Tania Lemani, and Celeste Yarnall.
