Alkysine was a drug used to lessen the damage to neurological tissue after a catastrophic injury. It was not always effective for all injuries and on all species.

Dr. Beverly Crusher tried using an alkysine treatment on Lieutenant Worf following his spinal cord injury in 2368, but the medication was unsuccessful. (TNG: "Ethics")
