Alice Through the Looking Glass is a book written by the 19th century Human writer Lewis Carroll. The sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the book tells the story of a girl named Alice who travels through a mirror into a fantasy world populated by various fantastic characters including Humpty Dumpty. The book includes the poem Jabberwocky, a classic of nonsense verse.
Amanda Grayson was particularly fond of reading books, especially the work of Lewis Carroll. She would often read stories, such as Alice Through the Looking Glass, to Spock during his youth.
James T. Kirk also read the book as a youth and, upon recalling that later on in life, was surprised to learn that Spock, too, was familiar with fantasy literature. (TAS: "Once Upon a Planet")
In 2268, under the control of the Platonians' psychokinetic abilities, Kirk and Spock sang a nonsense verse that references language and characters from the book:
- I'm Tweedledee, he's Tweedledum.
- We're spacemen marching to and from.
- We slythe among the mimsy troves,
- And tire among the borogroves. (TOS: "Plato's Stepchildren")
By the 24th century, the novel was known to at least some extent on Bajor, since Kira Nerys used it a metaphor for the mirror universe upon returning from there in 2370. (DS9: "Crossover") In 2371, Smiley used a similar metaphor to describe the journey to the mirror universe to Benjamin Sisko, suggesting that Carroll's novel existed in that universe as well, and that knowledge of it somehow survived the fall of the Terran Empire.
