Advanced navigation was a course undertaken at Starfleet Academy, for cadets studying navigation.

Cadet Paul Rice took the test while at the Academy in the 2350s. The test had three options to it. Rice however, rejected all three options and used one he had come up for it. Rice's new option paid off and by 2364, the test had four solutions to it. (TNG: "The Arsenal of Freedom")
