USS Voyager during ablative generator installation

Installation of ablative generators on Voyager

Janeway's shuttle with armor deployed

Ablative generators were extremely advanced shield emitters capable of creating a nearly-impenetrable layer of armor around the hull of a ship so equipped. Along with transphasic torpedoes, they were developed by Captain Kathryn Janeway and the crew of the USS Voyager in the late-24th century specifically for use in defending against the Borg.

In 2404, Janeway, at this point an admiral, utilized a shuttlecraft equipped with ablative generators when meeting with Korath, a Klingon scientist who had developed a device allowing for time travel. As part of her plot to change history by returning Voyager to the Alpha Quadrant sixteen years early, Janeway stole the device and used the armor to defend against a retaliatory attack from a Template:ShipClass warship. Later, after successfully traveling back in time to 2378, Admiral Janeway assisted the Voyager crew in installing the advanced technology aboard the ship, for use in defending against Borg attacks while attempting to access a transwarp hub located in a nebula in grid 986. Entering a transwarp aperture bound for the Alpha Quadrant, Voyager's armor integrity was depleted to six percent by a pursuing Borg sphere, however the Voyager crew were able to use transphasic torpedoes to destroy the sphere upon exiting the transwarp conduit. (VOY: "Endgame")

Background

After its critical role in "Endgame", the armor was not shown or mentioned in any film or series again.

This armor should not be confused with the ablative armor used on Borg spheres, the USS Defiant and USS Prometheus. Concept drawing of Admiral Janeway's shuttle by Rick Sternbach described the future armor as Nanotech Molecular armor plating.

According to Mr. Scott's Guide to the Enterprise (page 14), the deflector shields of the refit-Template:ShipClass were a similar technology, while only the defense fields protecting the top decks were traditional force fields. The main shield grid was a massive replicator system, projecting an invisible hull layer, moleculary identical to the diburnium-osmium alloy used to build the Kalandan outpost.

Apocrypha

The ablative generator technology appears on the Intrepid-class retrofit available to players of Star Trek Online.

The ablative generators were mentioned in the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy of novels: they were intially examined by Starfleet as a part of Project Full Circle but were abandoned as anti-borg technology because the Borg Queen had assimilated this technology from Admiral Janeway.
