  • The USS Enterprise, under the command of Christopher Pike, visits Rigel VII. While commanding the landing party, Pike enters an abandoned fortress and fights a Rigelian Kaylar warrior. The landing party's ambush leads to seven injuries, and three deaths, including Pike's yeoman.
  • The Enterprise, en route to Vega colony to hospitalize the Rigel VII victims, is diverted by an 18-year old distress call from the SS Columbia, crashed on Talos IV.
  • Captain Pike is trapped by the native Talosians, who used the distress call as bait to lure a mate for Vina, the only Columbia survivor. After being subjected to realistic scenarios of his dreams and some of his nightmares, Pike escapes, and the Talosians are convinced that human nature would prevent any of that species from being bred and living in captivity.
  • The Enterprise continues on to Vega. (TOS:"The Cage")
