- Stardate 2233.04: Attack on the USS Kelvin: the Romulan mining vessel Narada arrives from 2387 and engages the USS Kelvin. Captain Richard Robau is ordered aboard the mining ship and is asked the location of Ambassador Spock and the stardate. When the date is mentioned, Nero immediately kills him in rage. He resumes his attack, resulting in the destruction of the Kelvin and the death of George Kirk, who took command for 12 minutes after Robau's departure and death; Winona Kirk gives birth to James T. Kirk on Medical shuttle 37 as it departs the Kelvin. (Star Trek)
According to a Q&A with Bob Orci at trekmovie.com, Nero's incursion occurred during the USS Kelvin's voyage to Earth. Up to this point the timelines were identical.
